Need a Bigger Car? How to Know When it’s Time to Upsize to an SUV

SUZ Upsize blog

Whether your family is growing, or your work is expanding, life could be showing you signs that you might need to upsize to an SUV. Your current car might have been perfect for your lifestyle when you first got it, but now that your requirements have changed, it might not be checking all the boxes anymore.

If that’s the case, keep reading to find out some of the main reasons it might be time to upsize to a small or medium-sized SUV, to help inform your decision.

Your Family Situation Has Changed

One reason you might be thinking about upsizing your everyday car is to make room for new family members. If you’re at a stage in your life where you’re considering starting a family, you might need the extra space for things like car seats, day packs, strollers, and other items that require more capacity.

If you’re caring for elderly or disabled family members, a higher off the ground SUV can make a huge difference when it comes to getting in and out of the vehicle. A small SUV will not only be easier and more comfortable for aging bones, but will also provide more space for walkers or wheelchairs.

Pets are part of the family too, and if you’re considering getting a new pet, you may require a bit more space. Not only will your furry friend be occupying some of the seating or boot space, you’ll need extra room for things like pet carriers when visiting the vet, and emergency packs for when you’re out and about.

Your Work or Vehicle Needs Have Changed

If you’re growing your business or need to spend more time on the road for work, an SUV might be a better option for those longer trips on the road.

When driving an SUV, you’ll appreciate the higher seating position for better driver visibility, especially when it comes to things like parking and reversing, as well as navigating tight or tricky driveways or work sites.

As SUVs tend to be more spacious than smaller cars, there is more head room and leg room for the driver and backseat passengers making it more comfortable for everyone on long journeys or commutes.

Loading up luggage or work equipment can be challenging in a smaller car without having to fold down the seats and rearrange the car. With an SUV you have the additional space in the boot for carrying extra cargo.

Taken Up a New Hobby

If you’ve taken on a new hobby like fishing, hiking, or golfing, the shape of an SUV provides more space because of the larger roof area and the straighter design of the roof line, which doesn't taper down at the back. This can make a huge difference when you have a decent amount of equipment to pack, without having to leave anything behind.

Longer or bulkier items can be added on top of the SUV with roof rack attachments for more flexibility and you can stack and pack more items inside the car with or without seats down.

An SUV provides the extra ability to comfortably tow a trailer as they are heavier than a smaller car and depending on their towing capacity, you can take along the caravan or horse float too.

Another reason you may need more space is if you or your kids play sports. With all the gear that you may need to pack, as well as potentially needing to car-pool others along the way, an SUV will provide enough room to fit everything in comfortably.

Your Budget Will Allow It

If you think an SUV is out of reach, it may be more affordable than you think, especially when you consider the range of reasonably priced and economical small to mid-sized SUVs on the market.

You’d think the larger body size and powerful engine would make an SUV less fuel-efficient, however the use of clever engine technology and lightweight SUV design can give smaller cars a run for their money.
